Our Inspiration
Born from Love, Built on Strength
My name is Michael, and Gina Smiles was created in honor of my mom, Eugenia “Gina,” who battled kidney cancer with unwavering courage. Her journey began in November 2019, when our family received the devastating news that she had stage 3/4 kidney cancer. The world had already shifted due to the Covid lockdown—but in that difficult moment, it gave me the gift of time. I was able to be by her side, working from home, becoming her caregiver, advocate, and source of strength.
Despite the pain, Mom never stopped smiling. Her spirit remained unshakable. And though we had moments of hope, in May 2021, the cancer returned aggressively and took her from us far too soon.
Her love, laughter, and strength live on in every step we take. She was more than a mother—she was a hero. Gina Smiles is my tribute to her and to all those affected by cancer.
Why We Run
Every Step Has a Purpose
Our 5K events are more than races—they are acts of remembrance, celebration, and resilience. We run for the survivors. We run for those still fighting. We run for those we’ve lost, and for those who love them.
Each mile honors Gina and uplifts countless others whose lives have been touched by cancer. It's our way of turning grief into action and love into movement.

My mom always taught us that family comes first—from cradle to grave. And during her illness, our family lived that lesson. My wife was my rock, offering unwavering comfort and strength. My dad stood faithfully by my mom’s side. My sisters showed endless positivity and sought every possible way to support her journey.
We rallied together—friends, relatives, and community—all driven by love and a shared belief in hope.

The money our team raises goes directly to the American Cancer Society, helping fund life-saving cancer research, support services, and resources for patients and families. That includes rides to treatment, lodging for those far from home, and free information to guide people through one of life’s hardest battles.
